First Nations Priorities for the First 100 Days of Parliament

On May 12, 2025, Senator Prosper held a press conference with National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, Chief Leroy Denny (Eskasoni First Nation), Chief Gerry Toney (Annapolis Valley First Nation), First Nation Finance Authority CEO Ernie Daniels, Ta’n Etli-tpi’tmk Co-Lead Negotiator James Michael, One Bowl Executive Director Candace Larsen and other Indigenous leaders to highlight seven key priorities that can be reasonably actioned in the first 100 days of Parliament. These priorities have also been linked to the government priorities outlined in the recent Speech from the Throne.

The countdown started on May 28, 2025, the day after the Speech from the Throne, and ends on October 16, 2025, after 100 sitting days in Parliament.

Reviving the Cultural Repatriation Bill

Reviving the Cultural Repatriation Bill

Formerly known as Bill C-391, which was introduced in the House of Commons by former MP Bill Casey, this bill aimed to create a national framework around the repatriation of Indigenous human remains and cultural property.  Sen. Prosper is looking to revive this initiative, updating it to better reflect the recent efforts around cultural repatriation, and looking to perhaps incorporate digital repatriation.

Updating Reconcili-ACTION

Updating Reconcili-ACTION

Since its release on October 1, 2024, Reconcili-ACTION has been used as an official briefing document in the Office of L’nu Affairs in Nova Scotia, and a textbook in post-secondary and graduate courses in SFX, Dalhousie, St. Mary’s and Cape Breton University. In recognition of this, Sen. Prosper aims to update the issues and priorities tables in his annual progress reports, to ensure users have access to the most up-to-date information.

By-Law Enforcement Roundtable

By-Law Enforcement Roundtable

Every community the Senator visited on his Mi’kma’ki tour referenced the need to ensure that First Nation by-laws are enforced and prosecuted.  Drawing on examples from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Sen. Prosper led a roundtable table discussion at the annual Nationhood conference hosted by KMKNO held in February, 2025 in Membertou.

2025 Art Contest

Sen. Prosper launched his inaugural Art Contest open to all school-aged Mi’kmaw children throughout Mi’kma’ki. Both winners received a cash prize of $100. The winner of the Grades K-7 category will have their work featured on the Senator’s 2025 Christmas card, while the winner of the Grades 8-12 category will have their art featured on the cover of the Senator’s 2025 Annual Report. We plan to make this an annual event, so young artists should stay tuned for the next contest launch!

King Charles III Coronation Medals

King Charles III Coronation Medals

To mark the coronation of King Charles III, an exclusive run of 30,000 medals were minted and awarded to Canadians who have contributed to their communities and Canada as a whole. Senator Prosper was able to more than double his allotment of medals, due to the generosity of retired NS Senator Hon. Stephen Greene and Sen. Judy White (NFLD).

Mi’kma’ki Tour

Mi’kma’ki Tour

Sen. Prosper is engaging in a listening tour to learn from leaders and community members throughout Mi’kma’ki about the issues that are most important to them. Your priorities will become his priorities.

The Senator wants to ensure that his work in the Senate is an evolution of his work as a chief and as a former AFN Regional Chief for Nova Scotia. His work in the Senate will be guided by the feedback that he receives on this tour. He will use his position in Ottawa to influence legislative and policy change across the country.

Senator Prosper will be centering his work around the 7 Sacred Teachings. It is his goal to work in an open and transparent manner, with regular reporting. While he will be working on behalf of Canadians and L’nu across the country, his heart and soul will always be in Mi’kma'ki.
